About me
I have spent over ten years working at the leading edge of biophysics and still act as a consultant in the field of biotechnology. I have been practicing large format photography for the last four years gaining acclaim for the panache of the pictures and their sense of place. In 2005, I co-founded the UK large-format photography forum which has gone on to unite the UK community. Much of my work is in colour thanks to a natural eye for colour-based compositions, although I do take some pictures in black and white.
I have found photography to be a natural companion to my love of the Outdoors and to my interest in architecture. These two strands have guided my artistic development pushing me to explore and understand them more profoundly.
My background as a scientist has been an asset to my photographic endeavours, all the more so since I have adopted view camera technology which is an all-manual approach. As well as a sense for the aesthetically pleasing, this approach requires considerable technical knowledge: a thorough understanding of focussing flexible cameras, control over perspective, deriving the correct exposure and more. In the realm of black and white photography, my training also helps me correctly expose and develop the film, and understand the effect of coloured filters.
Playing to my strengths, I now offer a large-format photography service in the fields of Architecture, Industry and Landscape. The view camera is an ideal tool in all these cases (see technical notes). My experience in these different environments means I understand the client’s perspective and priorities. In addition to my scientific and photographic skills, I have spent long periods of my life abroad and welcome international commissions as much as UK-based ones.
